Why was the Duane Reade Diabetes Resource Center established?

As the number of individuals with diabetes in the New York metropolitan area is reaching epidemic levels, healthcare providers need to collaborate to adequately educate those affected. Recognizing this need, Duane Reade established the Diabetes Resource Center to provide a comprehensive facility for individuals with diabetes and their families to obtain education, training, medications, and diabetes supplies in one location.

The core function of the Diabetes Resource Center is to assist and support people with diabetes to:
  • understand the nature of their illness and its treatment;
  • identify emerging health problems for prevention and treatment;
  • to make lifestyle changes to promote health;
  • adhere to drug regimens and self-care practices.
What does the Diabetes Resource Center Offer?

The Diabetes Resource Center provides free diabetes self-management education, support groups, scheduled appointments and walk-in services for achieving successful health-related outcomes.

The educational classes are administered in 2-hour sessions, meeting each week for 5 weeks. Registration is required.

Week 1: You! and Diabetes
Blood Glucose - Blood Pressure Monitoring - Keeping Records
Week 2: Food
Week 3: Physical Activity
Medications
Week 4: Monitoring and Preventing Complications
Week 5: Setting Goals - Putting it all together!

The support groups are conducted monthly.

The scheduled appointments and walk-in services offered are:

  • Personal consultation & training
  • Diabetes risk assessments
  • On-site reference library

The program is managed and taught by pharmacists and certified diabetes educators.

Who is eligible?

This program benefits any individual with diabetes who wants to take charge of their health and manage their diabetes to promote good health and improve their quality of life.

The Center is open to the general public.

An individual does not have to be a Duane Reade customer to obtain services or attend the classes.
