What is this medication for?
Calcitonin is a hormone that occurs naturally in the human body. Calcitonin salmon is similar to human calcitonin in many ways. However, calcitonin salmon is longer-acting and more potent than human calcitonin.
Calcitonin-salmon nasal spray is used to treat osteoporosis for postmenopausal women who have had menopause for more than 5 years and have low bone mass. This medication works by reducing the rate of bone breakdown, especially of the spine.
Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you are not sure why you are using this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor.
Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to use this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

How should I use this medication?
Calcitonin salmon is used in the form of a nasal spray. The recommended dose of calcitonin salmon is one spray (200 IU) in one nostril daily, alternating nostrils each day. The doctor will check on a periodic basis to see if the medication is working by ordering a test that measures the density of your bones.
Adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D should be taken when using calcitonin-salmon nasal spray. At least 1,000 mg of elemental calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D per day is recommended. Talk to your doctor about the amounts of calcium and vitamin D you should take when using calcitonin-salmon nasal spray.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not administer a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Store new, unopened bottles in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F. Do not allow the spray to freeze. Avoid shaking. When starting a new bottle of nasal spray, allow the spray to reach room temperature and then prime the pump according to the package instructions.
Keep this medication out of the reach of children. Opened bottles may be stored at room temperature (59°F to 86°F) and, depending on the product selected, kept for 30 to 35 days.

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to salmon calcitonin or any ingredients of the medication.
